Lewis Hamilton proved to be the god of the Montreal circuit. Dominating from Q1 to the last second, he blazed a trail of fire across the tarmac. Setting the fastest laps for all Quarters, he looked unbeatable until the last second when Robert Kubica gave him a scare by unexpectedly pulling off a fastest lap. But the crown soon came back to the king. A ferocious last lap by Hamilton , one in which he literally flew over curbs and slid and burned across curves, gave him the pole position by 0.6th of a second. His time was 1:17.88619
Robert Kubica was the man of the hour for BMW once again. Coming only fourth and fifth in Q1 and Q2, it looked like that was the position he would keep until his final flying lap where he blew away the Ferrari's to capture second place with a time of 1:18.49814
The hairpin curve turned out to be the Achilles heel for the Ferrari's, who did splendidly on the straights but lost everything repeatedly in that curve. Kimi Raikkonen recovered some of his pride, that was battered by Massa in the earlier sessions, by getting third place with a time of 1:18.73523. Kimi was primed for second place before it was stolen by Kubica.
Possessed is the word that springs to mind when you consider Fernando Alonso's fourth place in his Renault. Taking the car to speeds it has never seen in this season, he had a stunning qualifying and deservedly took his place among the top five with a time of 1:18.74622.
Another brilliant run for the Williams by Nico Rosberg, who performed consistently to work up to fifth place and a time of 1:18.84426. The feeling is high that it if the Williams team can field a faster car, they already have a driver who could take them to high places.
Massa finished the top order in sixth place, looking ill at ease in this circuit. He offered some initial challenges, but seemed to fade out in the last Quarter. He might redeem himself on Race day, but from the Qualifying, it looked like there might be rain on his parade. He was a full two seconds slower at 1:19.04823.
In seventh place was the second McLaren driven by Heikki Kovalainen, who was unable to extract a similar performance as Hamilton's from his car with his best being 1:19.08925.
The world of problems continued for Nick Heidfeld in the second BMW, who seemed to sputter in eighth place, a feat that looks all the more dark once it was over-shadowed by the brilliant performance of Robert Kubica. He clocked in at 1:19.08925.
Barrichello, at 1:20.84825, got ninth place, a fair deal for his team Honda, whose other driver Jenson Button failed disastrously and tenth place was given to Mark Webber, who drove with inspired brilliance in Q2 to fifth place but then crashed into a wall, forcing him to his current place on the grid.
